The question is, if you buy things in Thailand, for example in Zara, will the tax free be returned at the airport? Or how does it work?

That's not how it works. In certain stores there are goods for which VAT is refunded. In such stores, a special form is issued (along with a check). This form is then presented at the airport and a certain amount (small, from 4 to 7 percent) is returned there.

It depends on whether a particular store draws up taxfree. Almost everyone respectable does it. Nike has issued, a unique is also issued, but with a purchase of 2000 or more.
