About return tickets - this is a requirement spelled out in the rules. These rules can easily be more years old than you. They began to be checked especially actively about 5-6 years ago. So in February - you read some kind of wrong forum. And the rule is simple - when entering Thailand, you must have tickets from Thailand within the dates for which you have a visa. If you enter with a visa-free stamp (for 30 days), then the tickets must be for departure during these 30 days. If on a tourist visa, then within 90 days. But you won't get a tourist visa without return tickets.
