The sale of alcohol will be banned on June 3 in Thailand Next Saturday, June 3, Thailand will simultaneously celebrate the birthday of Queen Suthida and the Buddhist holiday of Visakha Bucha. In connection with the second event, the sale of alcohol will be banned throughout the country. In addition, June 5 will be an additional day off. Visakha Bucha (Vesak) is one of the most important Buddhist festivals and is considered the birthday, enlightenment and death of the Buddha, which occurred on the same day of the year, but with a difference of several decades. As in the case of other Buddhist dates, the holiday is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, namely, on the full moon of the month of Vesak. According to the Gregorian calendar, it can be April, May, and even June, as this year. Visakha Bucha is a national holiday in Thailand, as is the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Suthida, which coincided with it this year. Since both events fell on a Saturday, the following Monday, June 5, will be a non-working day. In particular, all government departments will be closed, including the Immigration Bureau, the Department of Land Transportation, and district governments. Visakha Bucha is one of the five Buddhist days on which Thailand prohibits the sale of alcohol anywhere other than duty-free shops at airports. The penalty for violating the ban is up to 10,000 baht fine and/or up to six months in prison. As announced last week, His Majesty Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty Suthida are planning to pay a visit to Phuket to coincide with the Queen's birthday. However, the details have not yet been officially announced anywhere.
