Simcoe, if you want a good connection both in Bangkok and somewhere on an island/in the middle of nowhere, AIS is best. Dtac seems to have the worst coverage, and True in between. I have AIS Lucky SIM. For 200 baht a month unlimited internet 10mb/sec. Calls and texts are not included. Pretty happy with it.

The required amount to the hotel can be changed at the airport, and then the rest of the amount can be exchanged in the city. You can also purchase a SIM card at the airport.
