The Thai media reported that authorities are considering a proposal for a major increase in fines and prison sentences for driving without a license. The Ministry of Transport believes that the current laws are long outdated and need to be updated. They want to raise fines to 50,000 baht (now 500) and prison terms to 3 months (now 30 days). Similar penalties are proposed for drivers who have already been temporarily deprived of their license (now only a fine of 2,000 baht). Penalty for invalid license will be increased 10 times - up to 10 thousand baht. Thus Thai authorities hope to modernize the laws and improve the culture of driving. At the moment this is just a suggestion and penalties for traffic rules violations are still regulated by the law of 1979 - Land Traffic Act. Here is a brief list of the main penalties tourists can receive: - driving without a license - 500฿ - driving without a helmet - 500฿ - driving without a greenbook* - 500฿ - driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs - 3,000฿ + 24 hours others in jail - parking in a prohibited place** - 500฿
