Housing is better to look at on booking or airbnb - especially if you are eating for the first time. There are all sorts of Thai sites - but it is better for a beginner not to go to them. As for the area - here holivar can flare up. Again, it is better to come and see for yourself what you like. Inet is generally good. But we need criteria for evaluation - speed, stability, ping.

Still Koh Phangan has as an option or Hua-hin. And someone in Pattaya winters. Again, everyone has different criteria for goodness.
