I met this on small islands in small hotels, for example on the Lipa or on the Perhentians ... but I haven't heard of that in Phuket.

This is not normal, but this was practiced when booking quarantine hotels in Bangkok. Do you interact directly with the hotel by official mail? the easiest option is to issue a virtual card in savings/tink. throw the necessary amount of money on it, wait until it is removed, then close it.

This is common in Asia, in hotels that do not have a merchant and they make a payment by manually entering the terminal, create a virtual card put the funds as much as you need on the hotel. After removal, close it.
