Thai media reports that the authorities are considering a proposal for a large increase in fines and prison sentences for driving without a license. The Ministry of Transport believes that the current laws have long been outdated and need to be updated. They want to raise the fine to 50 thousand. baht (now 500), and the prison term is up to 3 months (now 30 days). Similar punishments are offered for drivers who have already been temporarily deprived of their rights (now it is only a fine of 2000 baht). The penalty for invalid rights is planned to be increased 10 times - up to 10 thousand baht. Thus, the Thai authorities hope to modernize the laws and improve the driving culture. At the moment, this is just a proposal and penalties for traffic violations are still regulated according to the law of 1979 - Land Traffic Act. Here is a short list of the main fines that tourists can receive: • driving without a license — 500uah • driving without a helmet — 500uah • driving without a greenbook* — 500uah • driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs — 3,000uah + a day others in prison • parking in a prohibited place** — 500uah *greenbook — vehicle registration certificate, it is worth asking for a copy from the landlord. **red and white curb, No Parking sign — Section 57
