Do I need a return ticket when flying from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur? Will they put me on a plane?

I fly around Asia almost every month. Every time they board a plane, they require a ticket to leave the country. They didn't ask once, apparently the employee was new, because they didn't ask for the same Covid certificate. So it's better to have a ticket on hand. This is not the main convenience when planning trips today. If it is critical not to buy a return ticket, as an option - go to the airport in advance, if they request a return ticket, you can immediately buy it online and show them the code. So I had the same thing.
