An alternative is some places on Bang Po (it's better to look for housing in small villages there) and the area near Ban Tai (there are really very few decent and inexpensive housing here, either Thai style huts or very expensive villas

If it's really a wilderness for sociopaths, then Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam. But you will need to drive decently to good restaurants. It also depends on the time - when the high season ends (the second half of May and beyond), these beaches become very shallow. If something is more balanced, then chong mon, there is less wilderness and more life.
