It seems to be mandatory according to the rules of Thailand, but they rarely check it. Airlines check more often before departure to Tai. While I was dealing with this issue, I met a couple of cases when they were not allowed to leave Turkey due to the lack of a return ticket. You can make a return ticket or a reservation through special services if you are worried.

It depends - if it's the first trip in a year, then you shouldn't ask. If the third one - they will ask with a high probability. But there are nuances - which officer you will get and the probability drops if a family with young children.
