Do they ask for return tickets when entering the country?

On the same day, I went with friends on different flights. One was not asked anything at all, the second was asked to buy a ticket, they asked me where I was going later, but they did not ask me to show the ticket.

The first few borderlines were not asked, and the last time they asked, I didn't have one, I showed the housing contract and there were no questions.
