At the airport when you make out tax free, do you have to show things yourself?

A vacuum cleaner was taken out the other day. They didn't ask to show it, they just stamped the checks and that's it.

The first time when (stamps are put on checks, before check-in for a flight), they may be required to show, especially if something is oversized and clearly does not fit in a suitcase
