Transit in Bangkok, then fly to Phuket, first go through passport control and only then go on another flight? Will he be in the same terminal or where to go?

Depends on what kind of ticket you have. If you have a single ticket, where Bangkok goes as a transit - then all pass in Phuket. If you purchased separately, then go through everything at the first point.
