Isan cuisine is famous for eating a wide variety of creatures, such as: lizards, frogs and fried insects like: grasshoppers, crickets, silkworms and dung beetles. Initially forced to be creative in their search for food due to poverty, the Isan people now enjoy these animals as a treat or snack. Food is usually eaten with hands, sticky rice is pressed into lumps, using fingers as a tool. Soups are a frequent element of any meal, and contain either vegetables and herbs, pasta, pieces of fish, balls of chopped pork or a mixture of all these ingredients. They are eaten at the same time with a spoon and chopsticks.
