Do they ask for a return ticket upon arrival in Phuket? Can I buy it locally in a third country?

In 10 years of frequent travel to Thailand, I have never been asked for a return ticket. And in the queue, the neighbors were not asked (registration and officer's booth). In August I arrived, on the Thai side they did not even ask for a certificate of vaccination.

It's been a long time since this happened, most fly with a return ticket, or the karma is good. will likely be allowed to buy locally.
