This morning we arrived in Bangkok, no one asked anything about the return ticket. Made a reservation for $5 just in case to Malaysia.

The return ticket must be no later than 30 days if there is no Visa. Make a reservation that will be valid at the time of customs clearance, so that there is something to argue if the inspector has any questions.
