I don't know about the airlines. But upon arrival in Bangkok, customs asked for return tickets. I was with a child and the last time I was in Tai was almost a year ago.

When passing through border control, an officer may inquire about the availability of a ticket from Thailand. If the entry is by stamp - then the return ticket must be within 30 days (plus a couple of days). If the officer shows interest, and there is no ticket, then he may not let the person into the country. And according to the rules in this case, deportation to where he came from. And again, according to the rules - this is done at the expense of the airline. Therefore, some airlines are reinsured and ask to show a ticket. Moreover, this is spelled out in Timatica. Somehow.
